Masonry support angle installation


The purpose of training delivered against this standard is to provide candidates with the knowledge and skill to be able to safely install a masonry support system.

The purpose of training delivered against this standard is to provide candidates with the knowledge and skill to be able to safely install a masonry support system.

The scope includes:

  • An overview as to why masonry support is used in a building and the hazards and defects associated with non-compliance
  • Selecting the most appropriate masonry support by considering frame type, differential movement, type of cladding, masonry load and cavity width
  • Where to position a support angle and the different types available 
  • Equipment, tools and components used when installing a masonry support angle system 
  • Health and safety considerations when installing a masonry support angle
  • Reading a masonry support drawing 
  • Fit a masonry support angle using manufactures’ specification
  • Accommodating structural tolerances and limits of adjustment methods
  • Standards, regulations and best practice.

Occupational relevance

Training delivered against this standard would be relevant to the following occupational groups:

  • operative and craft
  • supervision.

Candidate pre-requisites

There are no candidate pre-requisites as part of this standard. However, a basic knowledge of the reading drawings, the use of drills, fixings, torque wrenches, tape measures and spirit levels/laser levels would be beneficial.


As a minimum, course instructors must be able to demonstrate that, in relation to this standard, they have:

  • A train the trainer or instructional techniques course certificate
  • Successfully completed training to this standard 
  • At least 2 years relevant industrial experience
  • A verifiable CV.


Delivery may be in an on or off the job environment.

Practical training could be in an off the job simulated environment. Theory could be delivered by the following delivery methods:

  • classroom
  • e-learning
  • a blend of classroom and e-learning.

All materials and equipment must be of a suitable quality and quantity for candidates to achieve learning outcomes, and must comply with relevant legislation.

The class size and candidate/instructor ratio must allow training to be delivered in a safe manner and enable candidates to achieve the learning outcomes.

This standard is considered to contain 51 per cent or more practical training.


For the successful completion of training, candidates must complete an end of course practical assessment or knowledge test that measures the learning outcomes and has a pass or fail criteria.

Quality assurance

Quality assurance against this standard will require initial approval of the training organisation and their content mapped to the standard. 

CITB will also conduct an approval intervention, either desk-based or centre visit, to ensure the training organisation can meet the requirements of the Training Standard. 

Approved training organisations (ATOs) will be required to present information on records of training and assessment upon request to CITB for desk based analysis. They will also be visited annually by the CITB quality assurance team.


Health & safety executive (HSE), other relevant codes of practice or industry card scheme criteria recommend that the candidate completes a refresher of his/her training (that is, to ensure their knowledge and/or skills are up to date) every 5 years.

Either on request or in 3 years from approval date.

The candidate will be able to:

  • Explain why support angle is used in construction of buildings    
  • Identify the defects associated with non-compliance    
  • List the equipment and tools used in installing a support angle    
  • Describe the different types of support angle in relation to frame type, differential movement, type of cladding, masonry load and cavity width   
  • Identify where a masonry support angle should be positioned   
  • Read masonry support layout and section drawings   
  • Use required tools to install a masonry support system correctly and safely   
  • Adjust a masonry support detail and the limits of each method of adjustment. 
  • Describe health and safety procedures when installing masonry support
