CITB Board member (finance post)

Time requirements: The expected time commitment for the role is on average two days per month. Trustees are expected to attend a minimum of four Board meetings a year.

The role

Construction skills are critical to the economy and this is a particularly important time to join the CITB Board.

Trustees have collective responsibility for our strategic direction, monitoring delivery and business performance, maintaining proper financial oversight and ensure effective governance. The CITB Board is accountable the the Secretary of State for Education, the Charity Commission, and more generally to constrution industry stakeholders.

Trustees will bring their specific knowledge and expertise to the Board. He or she will seek to deliver the statutory functions of the Board in the best interest of the construction industry. The successful candidate must also be able to make decisions independent of any affiliation to their own business or sector interests.

Person specification

The successful candidate appointed to the board will have the following skills and experience.

Essential financial experience

  • Senior level in finance and/or accounting roles including oversight of risk management
  • An ability to provide Board challenge to both the board and the CITB Audit and Risk Committee, including investment appraisal for new financial investment and the critical divestment programme which will reach implementation phase this year.

General essential requirements

  • Sufficient time and interest to participate fully in the work of the Board and to be an active ambassador and advocate for CITB
  • An ability to think strategically, analytically and to address complex challenges
  • An ability to challenge, influence and produce sound, independent judgment
  • A team player that is approachable, participative and confident in fostering co-operative working between trustees, the executive management team and other stakeholders
  • High level knowledge and understanding of employment needs and emerging trends and developments within the construction industry
  • An ability to act in the best interests of the construction industry as a whole and make decisions independent of any affiliation to their own business or sector interests
  • A commitment to the Nolan principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership.

Desirable experience and skills

  • Experience of working in a levy-paying construction employer
  • Recent corporate experience at board/senior level in an organisation of comparable or large size, ideally within the construction industry or the education and training sector
  • An understanding of the workings of a non-departmental public body and the CITB’s governance requirements
  • An understanding of legal, financial, audit and other regulatory requirements of a charity.
